History of Tenterden Golf Club

Tenterden Golf Club was founded in 1905 and registered with the Royal ancient golf club of St Andrews at that time.

A nine hole course was established at Leigh Green opposite the windmill which existed at that time on the Appledore Road some 1 1/2 miles from Tenterden station.

It was laid out on two fields to the right of the footpath leading to pigeon whoo, across the road from today's industrial estate, the site has since reverted to farmland and is currently used for Arable crops. The course at that time according to ancient record was a par 32 with holes Varying from 119 to 315 yards long. members numbers were 46 and the entrance fee was £1.

It is believe that in common with other clubs in Kent, The golf club was unable to continue during the Great war period but was revived soon after the war, unfortunately there is a little written documentation of the club between 1915 and 1923. However, during that period a new course was created on the land of Woodchurch Road site of the club today.

The Second course layout extended from Woodchurch Road to the foot of the hill at today's 12th hole, the first hole being located where the clubhouse now stands with the green positioned being at the far end of the top of the car park. The length of the course was probably less than 2000 yards long.

The third course was created in 1962 and extra 21 acres of adjoining land was least beyond the fourth and seventh holes. at the time,9 holes were designed by CK Cotton golf architects and some alternative tees were provided to allow a varied round of 18 holes. The Par was 68 and the course messaged 5030 yards.

Alexander Sim wrote all 140 members during the 1963 asking for contributions to enable this land to be purchased outright, he provided an interest free loan and together with donations that land was purchased. In those days, sheep grazed the course,(no longer permitted after the 1969 AGM) and there were wires around the greens to keep the animals off.

In 1972, 17 acres of land were purchased,12 which were previously rented and including the only entry from the highway into the course, the additional 5 acres was the land designate to be the practice ground. It was during this time that mains water was provided to the greens.

A land levy of £15 was added to member subscriptions during the 1985/86 season which enabled the club to purchase a further small parcel of land to the left of the third fairway and two new holes were built, the present 4th  and 13th and those were bought into play for an interim period.

The club obtained a further loan from Ashford Borough Council to purchase 31 acres of adjacent land in 1988.

The existing course was officially open the on the 12th of August 1991, where the club hosted the grand week of celebrations opening with the Kent professionals championship.
